Overview:
This docuement will cover many topics to help you navigate and use your Purdue Machine Properly. This will cover subjects like charging, software installation, updates, peripheral setup, and helpful software to know about.
Charging Information:
All Purdue Machine use a Port called a USB-C connection for charging, display, internet, and USB connections. When charging your Purdue laptop, it is important to use the correct USB-C port for charging. You will use the USB-C port with the ‘plug’ symbol next to it. See below:
If you have a Precision Model you can use the below screen shot:
These ports can switch locations on the computer so always familiarize yourself with the proper ports
Additional Info: Restart your machine 2 times a week to ensure any pending updates have a chance to install. Check for Monthly Security Updates 1-2 times a month. Please do not put stickers on your machine. If you are seeing any hardware issues, for example if the microphone or camera is not working, run the Dell Command Update Application. More information on that is below.
Important Applications:
There are 4 applications that you need to know about, those are Dell Command Update, Software Center, Company Portal, and Support Assistant. These can be found by searching in the start menu or in the Search function on your machine. You can find the icons below:
Software Center:
- Used to push software to your machine.
- Not expecting software, check this once a month for updates.
- Open the application by searching with the start menu or search bar at the bottom of your machine.
Company Portal:
- Replacing Software Center
- Can see all applications available for install or new software coming from Purdue IT
- Open the application by searching with the start menu or search bar at the bottom of your machine.
- You can find the Machine name on the home page.
Purdue Support Assistant:
- Provides Quick information when talking to a technician or service representative.
- Also Provides support links.
Dell Command Update:
- Used to ensure that your drivers and other components are up to date.
- Check this once a month or if you are seeing any hardware issues.
You can find how to run updates below:
1. Open Dell Command Update and click Check.
If you see the below screen shot you can close the Dell Command Application.
If updates do appear, ensure a power source is connected to the machine and stays connected during this process. Click the restart automatically button and run all the updates.
Once complete your machine will either restart automatically to finish BIOS updates or let you know that the updates are complete. Please restart your machine at this point and these updates will have been applied.
Bios Updates:
- One of the many updates that can happen with Dell Command Update.
- Black screen that will tell you it is doing a Bios update.
- Ensure you are connected to a power source the entire time during this.
- May take around 10-20mins.

Sign in Before Login (VPN Connection):
Sign-in Before Login (SBL) allows users to connect to the VPN and access campus resources prior to logging into their computer.
While at the login screen you will see an icon in the bottom right-hand side, the location has been outlined below. To run SBL click on this icon. For Windows 11 the icon will differ but will be in the same location.
Once you do the Cisco AnyConnect sign-in prompt will appear, most users will enter webvpn2.purdue.edu for the address. Sign into the VPN as you normally would (requires username and Duo Authentication).
Once you have done so you are free to log in to your computer as normal.
Dell Two Monitor Setup
To start, let’s take inventory of the items you received. For the standard two Monitor setup will include:
1x Hub Monitor (Brown Box)
1x Normal Monitor (Brown Box)
1x Keyboard and Mouse Combo
1x Laptop/Desktop
All Boxes will include the needed cables for the workstation setup, please reach out to the service desk (765-494-4000) if this does not look true. After that is complete, follow the below steps:
- Unpack the Hub Monitor and follow any directions needed for assembly from the box.
- Once Assembled, place it on the desk of your workstation.
- You have a few cables in the Hub Monitor box:
- Display
- Power
- USBC to USBC
- Auxiliary USB
- The Display cables look like the cable in the picture:
Please connect the cables like you see in the picture below, the port to the right unlabeled is the Internet port:
Once those are all connected to the monitor, plug the power cable into a Power strip that is connected to a wall outlet.
Please refer to the setup guide with the monitor if you need assistance with the power button location and other settings, default settings will work.
Next is setting up the second monitor, please follow any assembly instructions in the box packaging. Once Assembled, place it on the desk of your workstation.
You have a few cables in the Hub Monitor box:
- Pass through USB
- Power Cable
- Display Cable
- Connect the Power and for this setup we DO NOT need the Display cable from this box. Hold on to it for potential troubleshooting in the future.
- Once the power is connected, connect the other end of the Display cable coming from the Hub Monitor to the Normal Monitor.
- Next, Connect your Wired Ethernet cable to the back of your Hub Monitor.
- You can connect your laptop to the Small USBC Port (Pictured Below) and power it on and follow the setup guide that is with your laptop.
Once connected your machine will start populating the screens for you to use the monitor now.
Restoring Your Machine After a Reimage:
Goal: The goal of this Section is to provide customers with some quick instructions to have their machine close to back to normal after a Reimage.
- The first thing to do is to login on a wired connection using the VPN.
VPN: webvpn.purdue.edu
- Once Logged in you can sign into OneDrive to restore your desktop.
a. You can find this on the bottom right of your screen near the date and time or the Up arrow (System Tray).
- After signing into OneDrive your desktop should populate with your Icons.
- Next, you can open Company Portal or Software Center and install any of your apps that you need.
5. If you do not see the Company Portal app or if you do not see your applications to install, put in a ticket at the service desk for this. (service.purdue.edu)
6. Check to see if Software Center is available and has your applications.
7. These applications are tied to your user account and not the machine, only you can install these when logged in.
8. Next is to check to see if you need to import or sign into your Browsers for your Bookmarks.
a. All browsers will have the ability to back up bookmarks by signing into a profile and syncing your data.
b. Edge if the Recommended browser for Windows and ESS Support and should already have an account made.
9. Once your applications and bookmarks are all installed, things should be close to normal again after the reimage.
- To note, some personalization settings could not be backed up and will have to be reconfigured.
- For example, Theme Color settings.
Once the above is complete your machine will be close to normal.
