If you are getting the “Oops, your file could not be uploaded” error message in Brightspace, here are a few reasons why.

  1. Your file or folder name contains special characters. The following characters cannot be used in the names of files: ” * / : < > ? \ | –

  1. Your file or folder name contains too many characters. The limit to characters in file names is 260 characters, but best practice is to limit file names to two or three words.

  1. Your file name does not contain a valid extension. Avoid using two consecutive periods ( .. ) in a file name.

If you are getting the “Invalid file type. Some files are restricted by Brightspace or by the course instructor” error message in Brightspace, here is why:

  1. Your instructor has restricted the file type accepted for this assignment. To check to see what file is acceptable for submission, open the assignment submission space and under “Submit Assignment” you will see the file types allowed.

What File Types Do The Brightspace Submission Folders Accept?

  1. Files must be 100 MB (with Turnitin in Assignments) or smaller and 2.86GB or smaller (without Turnitin in Assignments).

  1. Pages documents will be accepted but generally can’t be read from within Brightspace and cannot be used with Annotations. So, save Pages documents as .doc or .pdf or download and install Word (available for free to students).

  1. HTML documents should be zipped in order to avoid code being stripped.

  1. If you have a Word document with tables, save the document as .pdf to ensure that the tables display properly when previewing the file in the grading window.

  1. If you are uploading one of the supported file types, but are receiving a “Your submitted files do not meet the file restrictions for this assignment.” Please make sure your file is less than 100 MB or 2.86 GB and is one of the following file types: html, doc, docx, hwp, odt, rtf, wpd, txt, ps, pdf, pptx, ppt, ppsx, pps, xls, xlsx, gdoc, tex (except for Turnitin).
