Overview
Respondus LockDown Browser is a specialized web browser that secures a student’s computer by preventing access to other browsers, chat programs, and applications during an online exam.
Instructions
Respondus Monitor is an optional feature of Respondus LockDown Browser that enables instructors to capture the audio and video of students while they take their exam. This produces a recording for each student and an automated process flags any uncertain activity for instructors to review. If instructors require Respondus Monitor for an exam, students will need a webcam and microphone to complete the exam.
Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor are available for both Windows and Mac computers, Chromebooks, and iPads (if the instructor has enabled the “Allow students to take this exam with an iPad” setting). There is no cost to instructors or students for the use of either product. When a Brightspace Quiz or Variate assessment has Respondus LockDown Browser and/or Monitor enabled, students will begin in their preferred browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, etc.), open the assessment, and will be prompted to download the software. If they have already downloaded the software, the assessment should open in Respondus LockDown Browser. Purdue IT lab computers have this software pre-installed. The MTHW 301 computer lab may have microphones and webcams available for use when Respondus Monitor is required.
Troubleshooting

- Ensure a strong and stable internet connection is being used (i.e. close to a router, hard-wired to the router, or a lab computer).
- Uninstall the Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor software, restart the computer, open the Brightspace Quiz or Variate Assessment, download the software when prompted, open the Brightspace Quiz or Variate Assessment.
