Why does an error message about my Keychain come up every time I login to an Purdue IT Lab Mac?

Description

This article provides information about Keychain errors that appear in Purdue IT labs when using a Mac.

Workaround Instructions

Apple's keychain is a facility for safely storing log ins and passwords and providing them automatically to programs such as email applications.

You can read more about this feature in the Mac Help file (available in the Finder's Help pull-down menu). The keychain is created when you first log in into an Purdue IT lab Mac, using the same login and password that you used when you logged in. From then on, it is automatically unlocked (allowing programs to access it) whenever you log in.

Each time you log into an Purdue IT lab Mac, a specially installed program called 'Keychain Minder' will check to see if the Keychain password is the same as the login password. If the passwords are the same, 'Keychain Minder' will quietly quit and you will proceed as usual.

If the passwords are different, 'Keychain Minder' brings up a dialog box, allowing you to set your Keychain password to your new/current login password. The passwords will be different after you change your career account password, because changing your career account password does not change your keychain password on the Purdue IT lab Macs.

If you cannot remember your old password, you may delete the Keychain and start over by selecting New Keychain. The next time you start programs (like e-mail), you will be prompted for a login and password along with the option to add the information to the Keychain. Select the check box if you would like to add the information to your new Keychain.
