Overview
For University faculty, staff, and students with standard managed Macs: These instructions will walk you through elevating yourself with temporary administrator rights on your Apple device. This can be used to install software, make settings changes, or perform other actions that require local administrator access.
Note: Privileges has replaced "Make Me Admin", which was previously located in Self Service.
Instructions
You will need to use this app if, you need to install software, make some settings changes, or run "sudo" commands in Terminal App.
To make yourself a temporary administrator:
- Open the Privileges app.
Note: The app should be located in your dock, but if it missing, you can also find it in the Applications folder, or by performing a Spotlight Search for "Privileges".
- When the window opens, select "Request privileges".
- In the dialogue that opens, either provide a reason for your request to elevate, or use the drop-down menu to choose a predefined reason. Click Continue.
- You will see a notification in the upper right corner corner indicating that your privileges have been changed.
and the icon in your dock will change and look like this.
- You now have local administrator permissions for 20 minutes.
