Traveling internationally with IT devices involves compliance with U.S. export control laws and destination country regulations. Some countries restrict or prohibit the use of encrypted devices and software or require special licenses. To ensure compliance and protect both Purdue University and the traveler, this process must be followed:
- Notify Research Security and Export Controls (RSEC)
- As soon as travel plans are known, email rsec@purdue.edu with your travel destination(s), travel dates, and equipment needed (hardware and software).
- Notification must be made at least 10 business days in advance but earlier is strongly recommended.
- RSEC will assess whether export controls or sanctions apply to your trip.
- Wait for RSEC review and instructions
- RSEC will complete their review within 5 business days.
- If a loaner laptop is required, RSEC will provide a link to the IT request form (TDX) and further guidance about the requested software.
- Submit the Travel Loaner Laptop request (after RSEC review)
- Use the link provided by RSEC to request a loaner laptop.
- IT requires at least 10 business days to prepare and configure the device.
- Use the loaner responsibly during travel
- Only clean, secure laptops without sensitive data will be issued.
- Storage or access of federally funded research data is prohibited while in high-risk locations.
- Be alert for signs of device tampering or unusual activity and report immediately to rsec@purdue.edu.
- Return the laptop immediately after returning to Purdue
- The loaner must not connect to the Purdue network or systems upon return.
- Do not attempt to transfer data from the device yourself. Contact the IT department who provided the laptop if you neeassistance.
- The laptop will be reviewed for potential compromise before it can be redeployed.
