What is Zoom?

Overview

Zoom is a video conferencing and collaboration platform that supports virtual meetings, online classes, webinars, screen sharing, chat, and other digital events. Zoom is available to Purdue students, faculty, and staff and can be used for academic, administrative, and collaborative purposes. Zoom is also integrated with Brightspace, allowing instructors to host and manage virtual class sessions directly within their courses.

Access Zoom

Purdue-affiliated users can access Zoom through the Purdue Zoom service and sign in using their Purdue credentials. Users should access Zoom through the Purdue Zoom portal to ensure they receive the features and services available through the university agreement.

Using Zoom with Brightspace

Zoom is integrated with Brightspace and can be used by instructors to schedule and host virtual class sessions. To use the Brightspace integration, instructors must have a Zoom account within the Purdue Zoom environment. This integration provides a convenient way to conduct online lectures, office hours, guest presentations, and other course-related meetings.

Zoom Add-ons

Some advanced Zoom capabilities require additional licensing or add-ons. Examples include Zoom Webinars and increased meeting participant capacity. Departments interested in purchasing Zoom add-ons should work with their local IT support organization for guidance and billing information.

Data Handling and Security

Before using Zoom to discuss, display, record, or share university information, users should review Purdue's data handling requirements and verify that Zoom is approved for the applicable data classification. Users are responsible for ensuring that university data is handled in accordance with current Purdue security and privacy guidelines.

For current guidance, review the Purdue data classification and handling standards on the Secure Purdue website.
