CERTINext - Domain Control Validation (DCV) - Overview

Overview

This article provides an overview of the Domain Control Validation (DCV) process in CERTINext and links to the appropriate procedures based on domain ownership.

Domain Control Validation is required before certificates can be issued for a domain in CERTINext. Validation is performed by creating a DNS TXT record provided by CERTINext and then verifying the record through the CERTINext portal.

The process differs depending on who manages the domain's DNS records:

Purdue-Managed Domains

Purdue-managed domains are hosted within Purdue-managed DNS infrastructure. DNS TXT records for these domains are typically created by Purdue IT IAMO staff and inserted into the DNS Settings by Purdue IT Networking staff. When checking a domain, you can use nslookup followed by the domainname in the command prompt, or use icannlookup to see if it uses Purdue's nameservers. ICANN Lookup

To validate a Purdue-Managed Domain, see these instructions:

Non-Purdue Domains

Non-Purdue domains are owned or managed by external organizations, research groups, partner institutions, or other entities outside Purdue IT.

DNS TXT records for these domains must be created by an external domain administrator with access to the domain's DNS provider. A Purdue point of contact (typically also an admin in CERTInext) may be needed to identify the appropriate external administrator.
