Overview

AppsAnywhere provides access to Purdue-licensed applications through a centralized software portal. Depending on the application, software may be delivered through Parallels Remote Application Server (RAS). When available, users may have the option to launch applications using either the Parallels Client or the HTML5 Client (Web Client).

The Parallels Client is a locally installed application that provides the full remote application experience, while the HTML5 Client runs entirely within a web browser and requires no software installation. Understanding the differences between these options can help you choose the best experience for your device and use case.

Parallels Client

The Parallels Client is a locally installed application that provides full access to remote applications and desktops published through Parallels RAS. 

Advantages

  • Provides the best overall performance.
  • Supports RemoteApps and published desktops.
  • Supports drag-and-drop between local and remote sessions.
  • Supports smart card authentication.
  • Supports local device integration such as scanners and printers.
  • Supports advanced display and session features.

Requirements

  • Installation of the Parallels Client software.
  • Administrative rights may be required depending on the device.
  • Periodic client updates may be necessary.

Recommended For

Use the Parallels Client when:

  • You regularly use AppsAnywhere applications.
  • You need the best performance.
  • You require advanced functionality such as device redirection, scanners, or drag-and-drop support.
  • You are using applications that will be accessed frequently.

HTML5 Client (Web Client)

The HTML5 Client runs entirely in a web browser and does not require any software installation. Users simply sign in and launch applications directly from their browser. 

Advantages

  • No installation required.
  • Works on most devices with a modern web browser.
  • Useful on managed or shared computers where software installation is not permitted.
  • Provides quick access to applications from virtually anywhere.

Limitations

Compared to the full Parallels Client:

  • Drag-and-drop support may be unavailable.
  • Smart card authentication is not supported.
  • Scanner redirection is not supported.
  • Some advanced RemoteApp features may be limited.

Recommended For

Use the HTML5 Client when:

  • You are using a shared or public computer.
  • You do not have permission to install software.
  • You need temporary access to an application.
  • Convenience is more important than advanced features.

Troubleshooting

Parallels Client Does Not Launch

  • Verify the Parallels Client is installed.
  • Restart the Parallels Client.
  • Relaunch the application from AppsAnywhere.
  • Confirm the application is assigned to your account.
  • If problems persist, collect AppsAnywhere support data and contact Purdue IT. 

HTML5 Client Performance Issues

  • Use a supported browser such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.
  • Close unused browser tabs.
  • Verify your internet connection is stable.
  • Consider using the full Parallels Client for improved performance and functionality. 

Additional Information

AppsAnywhere may automatically recommend or launch a preferred method depending on the application being accessed. If both options are available, Purdue IT generally recommends using the Parallels Client for the best user experience and using the HTML5 Client when software installation is not possible.
