Instructions
BIOS updates for Dell PCs
Purdue IT will start deploying BIOS firmware updates for all Dell Windows PCs. After successfully installed, it will require your computer to be rebooted, but not immediately.
You may see a pop-up notification that says, “Software changes are required”.

Clicking this will open a dialog box with some options for when to install it. It also lists the deadline, after which, it will automatically install it and not give you a choice.
- Right now
- Outside my business hours
- Snooze and remind me later

The update will also be listed in Software Center under the Applications tab. You may find it easier to find by searching for “Bios”. The icon will be a blue Dell icon.

Clicking on the entry shows more details along with a button to Install or Schedule (if the deadline hasn’t passed yet).

When you install, or if it automatically starts after the deadline, you’ll be given options to Defer or Continue the installation. You’ll have 3 opportunities to defer before you must continue the installation.

When you click Continue, the installation will start.

When the installation completes, you’ll be prompted to reboot. You can do so by clicking Restart now. If you click Minimize, the pop-up will reappear every 5 minutes. If your computer is a laptop, before restarting, ensure your computer is plugged into a wall outlet.

The firmware update will commence. There are a few components that will be updated. Do not interrupt power to the computer during this process or your computer may be left in an unbootable state!

Once complete, the computer should boot back to the Windows log-on screen.
