Overview
To keep Purdue-IT managed Windows laptops secure and up to date, monthly system updates are automatically deployed. These updates may require a system reboot, which will occur automatically if not completed within 7 days. This article outlines how the update and reboot process works, including examples of the notifications that'll be received.
Details
Automatic Installation
Reboot Grace Period
- If a reboot is required to finish applying the updates, users will have 7 days to restart their laptop before it’s automatically rebooted.
- During this 7-day grace period, the system will not force a reboot, allowing users time to save work and plan accordingly.
Reminder Notifications
- Users will receive a reminder dialog window every 24 hours during the 7-day window, notifying them of the pending reboot. Below is an example of the notification:

Final Countdown Notification
- When 1 hour remains before the forced reboot, users will receive a final dialog window with a countdown timer.

- This notification provides a last opportunity to save work and manually restart the device before the system automatically reboots.
Reboot Behavior
- Once the 7 day reboot window has expired, the laptop will reboot regardless if it's in use or not.
- If a user is logged in at the time of the reboot, all applications will automatically close and the device will reboot to finish applying updates.
