What is a PIC and how do I get one activated?

Overview

A PIC (Purdue Information Connection) is the physical phone and data jack wall connections to the Purdue Network on the West Lafayette campus.

Details

If you have questions about a data connection, please contact your local departmental IT technical support area first.

If your room does not have a PIC, and you need the ability to have a phone AND a computer:

  • For a standard PIC, which consists of (2) telephone jacks and (2) data jacks, contact your Business Office and have them submit a request to the Work Control Center, Physical Facilities.  Enter the request through the OnePurdue Plant Maintenance.

You have a PIC, but you need some additional phone or data jacks at that location:

  • For additional cables to an existing PIC, contact your Business Office and have them enter the request through the OnePurdue Plant Maintenance.

You have a room that has no PIC, and you need the ability to have a phone OR a computer:

  • For a phone-only PIC, which has (1) phone jack, or a data-only PIC, which has (2) jacks, contact your Business Office and have them submit the request through the OnePurdue Plant Maintenance.

NOTE: Activation of phones requires a request to be submitted to the Telephone Department.  Activation of data jacks will require a request by your Network Administrator/Manager to the Purdue Data Network.

How can I tell if a PIC is turned on?

To view the current state of a PIC, go to the Risque PIC Connection Report page. It will return the current speed and subnet, as well as the account number that is associated with the PIC.

If the PIC does not exist within Risque (but physically exists in a building), you can email it@purdue.edu to report this issue. The result of this email will auto-generate a ticket within the Purdue IT TDX Ticketing System. Someone from Purdue IT will address that ticket and follow up with you regarding your question.

How do I make a speed, network, or subnet change to a PIC?

To request a change to a PIC, please go to the Risque Ticket creation page.

To gain access to the site, please go to Risque and click on the 'Request Additional Permissions' link.

How do I check the status of PIC requests?

To check the status of a PIC request, please go to Risque. You will be able to see all your current open tickets as well as any updates for those tickets.  You can also see all the closed tickets you have requested in the past.

Please contact the Service Desk at 765-494-4000 or IT@purdue.edu for network-related requests.

How do student organizations request PIC activation/deactivation?

If a student organization wishes to activate or deactivate a PIC in their office, they need to contact the Business Office for Student Organizations (BOSO).  BOSO can be reached at (765) 494-6724.
