Weekly Reboot Exception Process

Summary

Purdue IT now allows users to request a temporary exemption from automatic reboots on Windows OS devices (desktops/laptops) due to app installs or Microsoft updates. Devices can be excluded for 14 consecutive days (via two 7 day requests). A third consecutive week requires manual review by Purdue IT. Purdue IT may still reboot systems to fix critical vulnerabilities, depending on justification provided in the Reboot Exception request.

About the reboot exception process:

  • You can exclude a device from reboots for a maximum of 14 consecutive days (two consecutive requests).
  • You will be asked to provide justification for the reboot and the request will automatically be approved.
  • If an exception is requested for a third consecutive week, Purdue IT staff will manually review the request to determine if the system can be exempted from reboots for another seven days.

NOTE: Purdue IT reserves the right to reboot systems to resolve critical vulnerabilities with the operating system or applications. The justification provided will help determine if the device can be exempted from required reboots to address vulnerabilities.
