You will authenticate with your username@purdue.edu and password when logging into university applications.  If you are already enrolled with Microsoft MFA, you will be prompted to complete authentication with your enrolled Microsoft MFA method.

If you are not enrolled with Microsoft MFA, you will be prompted to set up MFA. This will happen automatically.

Applications that require Microsoft MFA include any application supported by Purdue Single Sign-On (SuccessFactors, Brightspace, MyPurdue, GoPFW, etc.), the VPN, and Microsoft applications including Outlook and O365 applications.

Q: Will my login experience change for the VPN?

A: Yes. When you log into the Purdue VPN, you will enter your Career Account Username and Password. You will then be prompted to complete authentication with Microsoft MFA.

Note: Microsoft will use the default Sign-in method set in your Security Info page.  You will no longer be able to select which method you want to use from the login screen.

You can choose to change your default Sign-in method for the VPN by following the steps below:

How do I Change my Default Sign-in Method for Microsoft?

See How to Log in to Purdue's VPN with Microsoft MFA for steps for logging into the VPN.

Q: What action is required prior to this change?

A: Enroll in Microsoft MFA using your Purdue Career Account.

You can enroll by following the instructions found here: Action Required: Prepare for May 2026 MFA Change – Enroll in Microsoft MFA Now

No action is required for users already enrolled in Microsoft MFA with their username@purdue.edu account.

Q: I use a university provided hardware token to log in with Duo. Will it still work with Microsoft?

A: No, hardware tokens previously provided by the university are not compatible with Microsoft MFA.  If you do not own a smart phone or are unable to use Microsoft Authenticator, a physical token may be utilized. Learn more by reading "How do I obtain a physical token (FOB) for MFA?" in the Purdue IT Knowledge Base.

Q: Which applications/systems are protected by Microsoft MFA?

  • VPN

Q: I have a new phone? How do I set up Microsoft MFA?

A: Before getting a new phone, follow the instructions from Microsoft to back up your Authenticator App: Back up account credentials in Microsoft Authenticator.

If you did not back up your account credentials, you may still be able to access  your Microsoft email and applications by following the instructions here: Lost access to your Microsoft Authenticator? How to reconnect to Microsoft MFA.

To have your Microsoft Authenticator App reset, you must contact the Purdue IT Service Desk by calling 765-494-4000 or visit a service desk location.

For information on how to set up Microsoft MFA, see How to set up Microsoft multi-factor authentication (MFA).

Q: How do I enroll in Microsoft MFA for the first time?

A:

You will be prompted to enroll in Microsoft MFA the first time you log in to something protected by Purdue SSO (SuccessFactors, Brightspace, etc), your email, or Microsoft applications with your Purdue Career Account.

If your account has been activated, you can follow the steps below to enroll via your Microsoft settings page:

How to set up Microsoft multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Q: What if I don't have a smart phone?

A: Microsoft multi-factor authentication allows users to verify authentication using various methods: the Microsoft Authenticator App (default and required method), SMS text messaging, or an audio phone call.

If you do not own a smart phone, you may enroll your phone number by selecting "I want to set up a different method" during setup.  Select the 'Phone' sign-in method. Microsoft 365 will ask for your mobile number, then send you an SMS message containing a 6-digit code to verify your device.

If you do not own a smart phone, or plan to be in a part of the world where you will not have Internet access and are therefore unable to use Microsoft Authenticator, a physical token may also be utilized. To learn more, see "How do I obtain a physical token (FOB) for MFA?" in the Purdue IT knowledge base.
