Details

The MRD5 (Mobile Reader Device) is a handheld, portable magnetic stripe and contactless credential reader that allows authorized staff to authenticate Purdue Mobile ID, physical ID cards, and other supported credentials virtually anywhere on campus. The MRD5 supports both USB and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication, allowing it to connect easily to smartphones, tablets, laptops, or NCR register systems using Transact software.

The MRD5 works with both Purdue Mobile Credentials and the physical Purdue ID Card.

Typical Purdue Use Cases

  • Campus event check‑ins using BoilerTrack
  • Check in locations using BoilerConnect
  • Dining operations credential authentication
  • Large exam sessions to visually verify student identity
  • Special events requiring temporary or portable access solution

ID Card Operations/Support can assist departments with determining whether the MRD5 meets specific use‑case needs. Loaner or rental equipment may be available for special events upon request.

Devices must be configured by the ID Card Operations team prior to use.

MRD5 Mobile Credential Reader Loan Request using BoilerTrack

MRD5 mobile credential readers may be loaned out for short‑term use; however, due to limited inventory, devices can only be borrowed for a maximum of three days at a time to ensure availability for all departments.

Purchase an MRD5 Mobile Credential Reader

To purchase and configure an MRD5 Mobile Credential Reader, departments will request a quote, submit a PO, and bring the delivered devices to STEW 194 for setup. Once received, ID Card Operations/Support will test and configure the readers—ensuring correct output formatting based on the system they will connect to, such as BoilerTrack, BoilerConnect, or other applications.
