Overview
This article explains Express Mode in Apple Wallet, including what it is, how it works, and how to enable it for supported items such as the Purdue Mobile ID.
Express Mode allows you to use compatible cards, passes, and keys without waking or unlocking your iPhone, or authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.
Purpose
Express Mode is designed to provide a faster and more convenient way to present supported credentials by enabling tap-and-go use at contactless readers.
Key Features
- Use eligible items without unlocking your device
- No need to open the Wallet app
- Works by holding your device near a contactless reader
- May continue working for a limited time when the device needs to be charged (power reserve)
- Can support multiple cards, passes, or keys at the same time, depending on type and issuer
Eligible Items
Express Mode can be used with compatible items in Apple Wallet, including:
- Transit or payment cards
- Student IDs (including the Purdue Mobile ID)
- Car keys
- Hotel room keys
- Scooter keys
- Other compatible passes
Selecting Express Mode (iPhone)
- Open the Wallet app
- Select a card, pass, or key
- Tap the More button, then Card Details
- Tap Express Mode (or Express Transit Settings)
- Select the item you want to use
Usage
To use Express Mode:
- Hold the top of your iPhone near a contactless reader
- A checkmark and Done appear when successful
- No unlocking or authentication is required
Important Notes
- Express Mode is enabled by default for eligible items when added to Wallet
- Multiple items can be set to Express Mode, but limits may apply:
- Only one item of the same type or issuer may be allowed in some cases
- You can use multiple different item types simultaneously (e.g., one student ID and one car key)
- Power reserve may allow use for a limited time when the device needs to be charged
- Express Mode does not work if the iPhone is turned off
Application to the Purdue Mobile ID
The Purdue Mobile ID is supported as a compatible pass in Apple Wallet, it can be used with Express Mode following the same behavior and requirements outlined above.
