Overview
The article provides instructions for Purdue University Fort Wayne students, faculty and staff on how to download and install EndNote on Windows or macOS devices. The article also advises to uninstall any previous versions of EndNote and back up any existing library or content files before running the new installer.

Uninstall any previous versions of EndNote
- First back up any existing EndNote library files and any customized content files (e.g. styles, connection files, and filters).
- Close all open programs, and then uninstall any older versions:
- Windows 11: Open Settings > Apps > Installed Apps. Find Endnote in the list and click the Ellipses button > Uninstall.
- macOS: Click the EndNote menu and Select Customizer. Click Uninstall and then remove the EndNote folder.
- Once any older versions have been uninstalled, run the new EndNote installer.
This will create a new EndNote program folder. When you launch the new version, you will be presented with the option to import data from an earlier version.
With EndNote X2 and later, customized content files will be stored in the user account folder of the computer and will not be removed during the upgrade:
Windows
C:\Users\<your username>\Documents\EndNote\
macOS
/Users/<your username>/Documents/EndNote/
Install EndNote for Windows
- Click this link: Endnote2025Win.
- Download both files, EN2025Inst.msi and License.dat to the same folder on your computer. It is important to keep both these files together in that folder.
TIP: Download each file one at a time by checking the circle in front of the file, then click Download.
- If the files were downloaded as a zip file, you will need to unzip them first.
- Run EN2025Inst.msi to install.
- Follow the steps to complete the installation.
Install EndNote for macOS
- Download EndNote2025SiteInstaller.dmg.
- Open the downloaded file to mount the disk image.
- Run the installer inside.
- This will bring up an image with "Licensed to: Purdue University".
- Click Install. Note: This may take some time to complete.
- This will launch the EndNote application to customize the installation.
- Click through these screens to complete the installation. You should not be prompted for a Product Key.
