E-mail delivery changes Spring 2024

Purdue email existing users who have previously had their purdue.edu email automatically delivered to a non-Purdue email address will be impacted by a change to Purdue's email system on May 20 and need to take steps to  ensure their emails are routed properly.

Effective May 20, 2024, Purdue Information Technology will implement changes to how email is delivered.

  • New students and employees will no longer need to turn on their mailbox to receive important emails from campus departments.

  • This primarily impacts existing users who have previously had their purdue.edu email automatically delivered to a non-Purdue email address.

To view your @Pudue.edu email after May 20:

  1. Log into the Microsoft365 email system at: https://outlook.office.com
  2. Check to make sure you don’t have any emails there that didn’t get forwarded during the transition
  3. Forward anything that you need to maintain continuity of your communications. Remember, forwarding email is inherently problematic; we recommend that you do not forward email in bulk as a default.

Email Forwarding:  Users who wish to set up email forwarding can follow the instructions for Outlook Web App.  However, it is not best practice. If you are going to forward it is recommended to “Keep a copy of forwarded messages”.  Utilizing the Microsoft 365 mailbox reduces potential delivery issues and provides greater security when users are inadvertently emailed restricted data. Purdue IT cautions against automatic email forwarding.

What if I don’t do anything?

Your M365 mailbox will be turned on and any current forwarding you have will be set up for you, although there may be disruptions in service.  To avoid disruption, we recommend you turn your M365 mailbox on using the instructions provided.
