Ag - How to find your computer name and IP address on managed Windows and Mac computers

Overview

This article will show you multiple methods on how to find your computer name and/or IP address on your Windows or Mac computer. When contacting AgIT with a computer issue, this information is important in helping us troubleshoot the correct computer.

Notes

  • The computer name will start with AG- for both Windows and Mac computers.
  • Each method shown in the instructions will mention which piece of information will be displayed (i.e. name only, IP only, name and IP).
  • IP address(es) on campus will start with 10.x.x.x. If you're using VPN, they will start with 172.x.x.x or 128.x.x.x.

Instructions

Windows - AgIT Help tool (name and IP)

  1. Open the Start Menu, search for AgIT Help and open it.

  2. The computer name will be listed under Machine Name and the IP address(es) are listed below Network Info.

Windows - Prior to signing into the computer (name only)

  1. At the sign-in screen, type .\ into the username field. The computer name will appear right below the password field.

Windows - About your PC (name only)

  1. Open the Start Menu, search for About your PC and open it.

  2. The computer name will be listed in several places.
    NOTE: When providing us a computer name, the one next to Device name is sufficient.

Windows - Network settings (IP only)

  1. Right-click on the network icon in the system tray and select Network and Internet settings.

    NOTE: The network icon in the left picture indicates that the computer is connecting via Wi-Fi.
    The icon in the right picture means that the computer is using a hard-wired connection (ethernet) or VPN.

  2. Click on Properties.

  3. Scroll down the list to find the IPv4 address.

Mac - Support Information tool (name and IP)

  1. Click on the blue icon on the dock that has an “I” on it. It’ll read Support Information above it.

    You can also open the Launchpad and find the Support Information tool in there.

  2. You’ll see the computer name and IP address in the open window.

Mac - General settings (name only)

  1. Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner and select System Settings.

  2. Select the General option on the left and click on About.

  3. The computer name is shown here.

Mac - System settings (IP only)

  1. Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner and select System Settings.

  2. Select the Network option on the left. Select Ethernet or Wi-Fi depending on the type of connection you're using.

  3. The IP address will be listed here.
