How to fix Office 365 when it says, “unregistered product”?

Overview

If Office 365 displays a red banner stating it is an "unregistered product," you may be unable to edit files or change layouts. Follow these steps to restore functionality.

Instructions:

  1. Open the affected Office application (e.g., Word, Excel).
  2. In the top-right corner, click the account button (it may show a picture, initials, or a generic person icon).
  3. Select "Sign Out" and confirm by clicking "Yes."
  4. Once signed out, sign back in. A "Sign In" button should appear in place of the account button from Step 2.

Additional Information:

  • Reboot Your Computer: Restart your device to apply any pending updates for Windows or Office that could be causing the issue.

  • Check License Availability (Personal Devices Only):
  1. Log into Office 365.
  2. Navigate to Install and more > Install Microsoft 365 apps.
  3. Under Office apps & devices, click View apps & devices.
  4. Expand the Devices section to see all devices where a license has been applied.
  5. If any listed devices are no longer in use or should not have a license, click Sign out to release it.
  6. Wait up to an hour for the changes to update. Once fewer than 5 devices are assigned, you can register Office on a new device.

Following these steps should successfully register and restore Office 365 access.
