How to download and install SAS from CommunityHub

Overview

SAS is an extremely large piece of software.  It requires careful preparation before download.  We strongly recommend that you download the software while on the campus network, either directly to your Windows laptop via the PAL wireless network or from a wired University machine transferring the download directly to a properly formatted removable external drive.

Instructions

Downloading to a laptop on PAL

  1. Make sure the Windows laptop hard drive has at least 60 GB of available space
  2. Order SAS on Community Hub
  3. Download the SAS zip file while on campus and connected to PAL
  4. Extract the 'sas94winxxtr.zip' download to a temporary location.  If successful, you can remove the downloaded .zip file to conserve space after extracting
  5. Install SAS from the temporary location.  After successful installation, you can remove the temporary installation files to conserve space

Downloading to an external drive

  1.  Obtain a high-capacity external USB hard drive or flash drive with at least 40 GB of available space

NOTE: Make sure the external hard drive or flash drive is formatted as 'exFAT', or 'NTFS with All Users read and write access'.  The SAS download will fail otherwise.

  2. Students should go to an ITaP Computer Lab machine.  Faculty and Staff can use their assigned University desktop

  3. Connect the Hard Drive or Flash Drive to the University computer

  4. Order SAS on Community Hub

  5. Set the download of SAS to save in a directory on your external hard drive or flash drive

  6. Extract the downloaded file to the drive to make sure it downloaded successfully.  You can then remove the downloaded .zip file to conserve space on the external drive

  7. Connect the external drive to the computer where you will be installing SAS .  The Computer will need up to 20 GB of space available for a minimum installation of SAS

  8. Install SAS on the computer (see next section for details)

Installing SAS

  1. Unzip the SAS zip file to a temporary location that has enough space for 25 GB of data.  Once all the files have been extracted to this temporary location, you can remove the downloaded zip file to regain space for the SAS installation.

NOTE: If you receive an error message during the file extraction, make sure you have enough space on your drive for the new files.  If you continue to receive an error after confirming enough space, the SAS zip file did not completely download and you will have to download the software from Community Hub again.

  2. From your temporary location, go to the SAS files and launch the setup.exe file.  This will begin the SAS Deployment Wizard.  On the Select Deployment Task screen, be sure that Install SAS software is selected.  Then, click the Next button

  3. On the next screen, make sure Install SAS Foundation and Related Software is selected, then click the Next button.
  4. On the Select Products to Install screen, select the included products that you need to install.

NOTE:  You might check with your instructor for information on what products will be used.  Selecting All will greatly lengthen your install time and the amount of space used by SAS.  It's suggested that you install only what you need or accept the defaults

Again, you can deselect the SAS Foundation Products if you are sure that you will not need them to reduce the install time; however keeping the default is appropriate for most installs.  Click the Next Button.
  5. Do not change anything on the Specify SAS Installation Data File screen or this will damage your installation of SAS.  This screen shows you when the currently distributed version of SAS will expire.  Click the Next Button.

  6. On the Select Language Support screen, it is suggested that you deselect everything and then select the languages you will need.  This speeds up installation time by only installing the languages that you will use, and will reduce the overall space required.

  7. On the Default Product for SAS File Types screen, in most situations you should leave the default selected.  Click Next.
    1. If you have installed SAS Document Conversion, on the next screen you can add the host name and port.  Unless otherwise instructed, the defaults are appropriate.  Click Next.
    2. The SAS Deployment Wizard then check your system and load the installation packages for some products.  Once it completes, Click the Next button.

  8. A Deployment Summary screen should now appear.  It lists all the components that will be installed.  Click the Start button to begin installation of SAS on your computer.

NOTE:  Do not be alarmed if this process takes a long time.  As long as you see active animation near the progress bars, the SAS installation is progressing.

  9. The last step in the install process is Install Post Processing...  Once that completes, you have successfully installed SAS and the screen should read Deployment Complete.  Click Next and then on the next screen click Finish.
