New Computer Setup Instructions for ESS machines

Before you begin, please note the following:

  • If you are a new hire, please ensure you have Duo Mobile and Microsoft MFA set up, first.
  • The computer setup process may take 2 to 6 hours to complete.
  • It is recommended that remote users have a broadband internet connection with a minimum download speed of 25Mbps and minimum upload speed of 3Mbps.
  • On OR off campus setup can utilize wired or Wi-Fi connection.
  • SBL (Sign in Before Logon) means connecting your VPN (Virtual Private Network) before your FIRST login (shown in the instructions). This is required for both on and off campus setup. Wait until setup is complete before connecting peripherals or plug-and-play devices.
  • If your NEW computer is a replacement, open the Company Portal on your current computer and make a note of what applications are listed in the “Apps” menu. Use this information to confirm your new computer has the correct applications downloaded and installed, prior to returning your old computer to Purdue IT. Instructions can be found in Knowledge Base article 764: (Where do I find my computer apps?)
  • You can set the new laptop “off to the side” on a Wi-Fi network and continue to utilize your “old” computer during the process.

TIP: Computer names have changed from (Old format) CSDS-12345 to (New format) ESS-EZWyEd9m7v.

Laptop Setup Overview

  • Before powering on the laptop, make sure it is connected to a power source using its portable power adapter.
  • Once powered on, the laptop will go through basic setup steps, and then will ask you to login.
  • Once logged in, the laptop will continue progressing through more advanced setup steps (most of which occur “behind the scenes,” meaning you will not see things scrolling on the screen).
  • Plan to restart your computer at various times during the setup to ensure downloads and installations are still progressing. Windows may prompt you to restart at times. If so, please restart the computer and proceed.
  • You may wait for extended periods of time while the computer downloads and installs applications, updates or other key configuration settings during this process. Please plan accordingly for these delays by using your existing computer.  Suggestion: It is best to start the process at the end of the day and allow it to sit overnight. You can finish the Company Portal installations the next morning.

TIP: These instructions can also be used when setting up a Desktop. The main difference is the Desktop HAS to be on a wired campus network connection. It is still required to connect to the VPN before the first login. Like laptops, the Cisco VPN client is pre-installed.
