To subscribe to a listserv mailing list: 

Note: Not all Listserv are open for subscription--some require owner approval. When in doubt, contact the owner of the Listserv.

  1. Address an e-mail message to listserv@lists.purdue.edu.
  2. Leave the subject blank.
  3. In the body of the message enter: subscribe name_of_list Your_First_Name Your_Last_Name.
  4. Send the message.
  5. You should receive a confirmation message that you were successfully subscribed.

To unsubscribe to a Listserv mailing list: 

There are 2 ways to unsubscribe from a Listserv mailing list:

  1. By sending an email
    1. Address a message to listserv@lists.purdue.edu
    2. Leave the subject blank
    3. In the body of the message, type SIGNOFF nameoflist
    4. Send the message. You should receive a confirmation email that you have been removed from the list.
  2. By going to the Listserv portal
    1. Go to https://lists.purdue.edu/scripts/wa.exe and log in using your email address as the username and your Purdue career account password.
    2. On the left side, expand the Subscriber Options section if it is not expanded
    3. Select Subscriptions
    4. Check the box by the list/s you want to unsubscribe from
    5. Click on the drop-down below the list names and select Unsubscribe
    6. Click on the Update button on the lower right of the page

If you have any questions about a specific list, direct them to the list owner. The list owner is always reachable by email at an address formatted like this: listname-request@lists.purdue.edu
This feature in LISTSERV allows a sender to send a message to a main list, and the message gets sent to people on different sub-lists without being marked as spam. It makes sure that each person gets only one copy of the message, even if they are on multiple sub-lists.

The use of the @lists.purdue.edu domain enables the Mailhub group to offer this service to a wider audience, provide mailing list-specific features, and clearly mark the address as a mailing list (not an individual’s email address).
